Submit Your Site to Search Engines and Directories
In past years, most search engine submission and directory submission was free, however today with so many sites hungry to get submitted, most search engines now charge a yearly fee.
I personally feel there’s really only a few search engines and directories worth your efforts, they are Google and DMOZ (open directory project), Yahoo and MSN. If you can make it into these, you will soon be included in the others. They are all still free to submit to, the only drawback is they may take several months to get indexed.
Here’s where you can submit to:
Enter your site name. If your site is optimized correctly you could be picked up and indexed within just a few days. If not, you could wait months. This is where good website and keyword optimization come in handy and we’ll discuss this a bit later in section 5 (website and keyword optimization.)
DMOZ is also free but a bit trickier to get into. The DMOZ directory is quite large and often hard to figure out what category you should be in. Read their instructions carefully. My recommendation is look around DMOZ and find a site that is well related to yours. When you find that site look at the address bar in DMOZ and see how it is categorized.
Yes, Yahoo does have a free submission, however as with the others you are submitting your site to the search feature, to submit your site to the yahoo directory which gives your site better visibility and almost instant access (if your site is accepted) requires a $299 fee. Here’s where you would submit for acceptance to the Yahoo directory.
Simply type your URL into the submit URL box. Only the main page of your website is necessary. This is true for all search engines.
You can pay the yearly fees to get included in other search engines and directories if you’re looking for quick entry, however remember that even if you pay for a listing, you are not guaranteed a TOP listing. That’s still dependent on how well your site is optimized.
What to submit
It’s only necessary to submit your home page. If your site provides good navigation and the navigation is included on each and every page of your site the search engines bots will pick up the rest of your site.
Submit your link to other sites and directories
Again I like Google. Simply type each of these phrases into the search box in Google. You will get several returns where you can either add a link for free or exchange links. This will take some time but you will find lots of useful sites.
For example, if your keyword is “digital camera“, you would enter into the Google search box:
# “add link” + “digital camera”
There are plenty of places where you can submit your site . . .
